CMF series 14 with reference to RoTK - 20151026

Today is the first day of the last bricktober 2015 set release.

CMF being the lowest priced items is always the go-to when you are just short of the last few dollars to clock $100.

As we move from point to point, my friend and I were talking about which are the most unwanted of the series. Then he started making reference to the 3 brothers of Romance of Three Kingdom. Please do your own homework as it's a very long story.

The three brothers title will, without a doubt, go to the 5s of the series. Monster Scientists, Monster Rocker, Zombie Pirate. But who is who?

刘备:confirm is Monster Scientist. Most unwanted of the lot. Always staying behind to man the fort. Though unstated, most cunning of the 3, biggest brain. Half of 厚黑学 is based on him.

关羽:Zombie Pirate. The 2 most defining characteristics of 关公 is his 青龙偃月刀 and his beard. Zombie Pirate comes with a large blade which was also the first choice of ppl trying to reproduce the same weapon for minifig; just need to extend the handle. And finally a extra beard piece, though not the ideal long type like Sensei Wu's, but still a beard.

张飞:Monster Rocker. Believe to be the dumbest among the brothers, Monster Rocker give you a look of not being so smart. What's more, one of 阿飞 story was that at a bridge, with a loud shout, he backs down 曹操's army of 100000. Guess the guitar will help boost it.

After the naming of 3 brothers, we went on to identify 5 tiger generals. 3 characters are needed for 赵云 马超 黄忠.

The next few more unwanted in sequence will be Squarefoot, Fly Monster, Skeleton Guy.

Both of us agreed 马超 is Squarefoot for his furry barbarian look.

No idea who is what next, any suggestions?

Whats is thanksgivings? - 20151019

http://www.allabouthistory.org/meaning-of-thanksgiving.htm

Thanksgiving holds different meaning and different practices for different ppl.

Here in Singapore, we dont really celebrate thanksgiving, or rather, thanksgiving is merged together with Christmas. Which is also why we have turkey on our Christmas dinner. Yes we are a highly efficient ppl. I'm waiting for the day when the rice dumpling festival and mooncake festival will merge and restaurants will be selling moon-dumplings.

Today we will be looking at the 2 thanks giving set. 40056-1: Thanksgiving Feast (polybag) and 40123-1: Thanksgiving Feast (boxset).

Maybe its just me trying to be romantic, but i like to look at sets and perhaps imagine that there are clues and stories that the LEGO designers has hidden in the sets.

As we can see, the minifig looks similar but has perhaps aged. Whats more to give thanks for than the well-being and companionship of our other half? well, maybe the 2 cats has died... but that will be another story.

We can see that for the male minifig is almost exactly the same. Same Torso, same hairpiece but different colour, grey for the older man.

Based on the same concept, the female minifig also have grey hair for the older minifig and a change in hairstyle. Understandable, you dont expect a lady to maintain the same hairstyle for 50 years do you?

What about the torso? you might ask. different torso = different minifig. well, hear me out. this is a part where only a castle fan will know.
The torso for the younger female belongs to the Kingdoms Lion Princess.
The torso for the older female belongs to the Kingdom Lion Queen.
Here we see a change in status, the princess has grown to be became the queen.

So there you have it. a link between 2 sets. an aging couple. Thanksgiving has never been more meaningful

Modulars are not all of LEGO - 20151016

Recently,  some fans were telling me that they feel like giving up on collecting. They cant get the earliest 3 and they don't see an end to the line. Its like dangling in mid-air; being neither here nor there.

What I told them was, Modulars are not all of LEGO.

Every year, LEGO releases more than 500 sets of LEGO. Modular building is just one of the 500. If I were to define a point that makes modular stand out from the rest, I would say its only its high count with a price to part ratio comparable to Creator series.

If you just gave it more time, you will realize that there is more aspects of playing LEGO than just modular.

In fact, being buildings, it's on the simpler end of LEGO structures. Buildings only build from bottom up, deploying simple SNOT when creating its facade. Starwars and Chima vehicles uses a number of techniques in other to make an irregular shape stable.

Ultra Agents makes use of a lot of new techniques in other to have the vehicles transformable and perform special functions. Yeah, that's the reason why the ocean HQ needs to have a brick built hull instead of a single piece that can float. So quit nagging that you don't want a ship that can't float. I don't see you throwing your Imperial Flagship into the pool either.

Modulars have a maximum minifig count of 8 (Townhall has the highest count). bad news for army builders. And at the same time, all the minifigs are generalized with classic faces so it will not be drawing attention away from the building. unlike Collectible Mini Figurine Series will gives every character a different expression, which had allowed me to recreated my friend's wedding photo in LEGO form. though my friend didn't know, I had to use an expensive Roman Legionnaire face mirror his expression. Bro, wedding leh, smile abit can?

Other area of LEGO, will include but not limited to, Landscaping, Minifig Mod (Gollum voice: Murderer~~); Minifig Molding; Micro Builts, Mech Builts, Mosaics, Giant sculptures, Life Size Replications.

So why does Modulars draw so much attention? another M word Money. Modulars has proven themselves to be highly effective investment vehicles. Even better than stock market as my investor friend exclaimed. But why does it hold so much value? Any bricklinker will tell you, its not worth the current market price as long as you are willing to alter the build slightly and accept a different colour replacement.

I would feel that the only reason is that, as long as you have older Modulars, it is very easy for you to gain envy and importance. Which sound more important? I built the entire Singapore, out of 20k bricks. or I have the entire Modular range. To a newbie, most of the time, the second line will draw out a lot of envy. You don't have to build it; You don't need to wreck your brains to solve issues in the midst of building; You just need to spend crazy money, buy the series, sit back, relax and throw out the line to steal the limelight from a MOCer.

Time and Money are the issue most ppl had problems with. Personally, with a toy that stress and encourages Creativity, I feel that it is ironic that this is happening. This is a gap that most ppl who just started will almost never be able to close. That is why a lot of veterans will advise looking forward, never look back. Its more important to have a healthy bank account than overpriced bricks. Pace yourself, LEGO collecting is not a sprint, its a marathon.

End of the day, every Modular release has me excited. Who don't like new parts and all Modulars are guranteed to have an exclusive part. You need to appreciate its beauty and not clouded by its value. I think the designer rather hear lines like how you never tot certain parts could be used to create certain looks; that it looks awesome and wonder how he came up with it than how much you think you can sell it in future and how much profit you can gain from it.

You may use these codes to buy other stuff, but personally I only buy LEGO. so...

Here is a slight explaination of how shopee works so that we can iron out all misunderstandings. I have my share of hiccups since my store opened.

1. Buyer Place Order - applying of promo codes are done here.
2. Shopee alerts Seller and give Buyer 3 days to make payment.
3. Buyer's Action
- Buyer makes payment and Shopee informs seller to ship
- Buyer forgets about it and Shopee cancels the transaction; this part Sellers have no control over and Buyer might lose the promo code.
4. Seller ships items
5. Buyer's Action
- Buyer needs to acknowledge that the good are received
- or apply for extension of date
- If no action from the Buyer, it is assumed that the Buyer has received the items after 7 days and will auto close.
6. Shopee will release payment to the Seller. which will take quite a few days.

Here are a few points to take note of.
- Sellers do not see how much the buyer is paying, what kind or how much savings you managed to offset using codes is not controlled or even seen by the seller.
- Payment settlement takes very long; please do not hold back the seller by buying something and not collecting. True that you paid for the items, but the Seller wont receive anything til much later. if you wish to create an unfavourable environment for the Sellers, they will simply list at a slower pace to have more payments clearing before listing more.
- Regardless of how many account or how many codes the Buyer is using, its the Buyer putting in effort to save as much as possible. Sellers don't have to adjust your pricing accordingly. You are not LLM.

A Seller Buyer relationship can be a cooperative one. We don't have to kill one another.
